 Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Metropolis Concerts

Wednesday 5 May 2010 at 8:00 PM

Melbourne - The CUB Malthouse

Repertoire

  • TURNAGE Blood on the Floor
  • Composer (Cybec 21C) TBC New Commission

Featuring

  • Bramwell Tovey conductor

Includes Mark-Anthony Turnage's Blood on the Floor

One of the most successful blends of jazz and classical styles to connect with audiences and musicians at an emotional level, Blood on the Floor is inspired by expressionist Francis Bacon's painting of the same name. The tragic drug overdose of Turnage's younger brother, while the work was still being completed, brought to light the music's deepest emotional resonances.

Saturday 1 May 2010 at 8:00 PM

Melbourne - The CUB Malthouse

Repertoire

  • ADAMS The Dharma at Big Sur
  • ADAMS The Chairman's Dances
  • TOVEY Urban Runway
  • BANKS Don Nexus

Featuring

  • Bramwell Tovey conductor

Includes Bramwell Tovey's Urban Runway

Tovey says of the piece: 'The concept grew out of a conversation with friends concerning the colourful idiosyncrasies of those who offer their patronage to the fashion houses on Fifth Avenue in New York or Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles.

'New clothes, even those unseen inside designer shopping bags, appear to influence the gait of shoppers as they strut along the sidewalk. With a little imagination the listener might care to speculate on the characters depicted in the music.'

MSO Jams:

Grab a unique opportunity for all the family to jam with members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra! People of all ages are invited to join members of the MSO for FREE Saturday Jam sessions at Federation Square's BMW Edge throughout 2010.

Over the course of an hour, participants will develop an original piece of music, using whatever instruments and 'sound-makers' are to hand. Voices, instruments, hands and feet, newspapers, chopsticks and other paraphernalia will be put to musical use in this afternoon workshop for families. The workshop culminates in a performance by participants, which is open to the general public. MSO Jams are part of the Orchestra's Community Outreach program, a dynamic and responsive series of workshops, masterclasses, visits and creative projects, taking place in schools and other community settings.

See the MSO website for dates.
