
New Zealand based flautist Kathryn Moorhead enjoys a diverse career as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral performer. She currently holds the position of Associate Principal flute in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Originally from Australia, Kathryn completed her postgraduate degrees at the University of Melbourne, the Amsterdam Conservatorium and the Brabants Conservatorium in the Netherlands. With scholarships from the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust and the Ian Potter Foundation, she studied with Leon Berendse from the Netherlands Phiharmonic Orchestra and Andreas Blau from the Berlin Philharmonic.
Kathryn has appeared with many orchestras including the Melbourne, Adelaide, Tasmanian and the Netherlands Symphony Orchestras, the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria. She has performed in guest principal roles with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as appearing with ensembles in International Arts Festivals in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Aberdeen and London.
A recipient of numerous awards, Kathryn has won prizes at the Leslie Barklamb Flute Competition and the Australian International Solo Flute Competition. She has recorded several solo and chamber music CDs with Move Records and her CD Unearthly Music for flute and piano has received frequent airplay on ABC Classic FM, Radio National Australia and radio stations across the USA and Asia. Kathryn is currently completing a PhD in Music at the University of Adelaide and teaches flute at the Epsom Music School.
